Now, one of the areas where understanding latency becomes especially useful is Linux system administration.
For example, when connecting remotely to a server via SSH, high network latency can make the terminal feel noticeably slow and unresponsive. Fortunately, there are tools that can greatly improve the experience.
One example is Mosh.
Mosh helps reduce the impact of latency on the interactive terminal experience. It can locally predict and render terminal changes on the client, then synchronize the actual state with the server.
This means that even when you're working with a high-latency or unstable network connection, the terminal can feel much more responsive and smoother than a traditional SSH session.

⚡️ LATENCY

One of the most important concepts in networking — and definitely something every developer, sysadmin, and security enthusiast should understand.

Latency is the amount of time it takes for a packet to travel from your device to a destination and for the response to come back. It is usually measured in milliseconds (ms).

For example, if we want to check the latency between our machine and 8.8.8.8, we can use the ping command:

ping 8.8.8.8
Example output:
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=1 ttl=112 time=126 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=112 time=183 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=3 ttl=112 time=174 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=4 ttl=112 time=549 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=7 ttl=112 time=140 ms
This test tells us how long it takes for packets to make the round trip between our machine and the destination.

📊 Results
Average Latency: 234.641 ms 🟠
Minimum: 126.353 ms
Maximum: 549.410 ms 🔴
Packet Loss: 37.5% ❌

In this case, the average latency is relatively high, but the 37.5% packet loss and the large variation between 126ms and 549ms are also important indicators of an unstable network connection.

🔍 Why does latency matter?
High latency can noticeably affect interactive applications such as:

SSH & remote administration
Online gaming
VoIP and video calls
Remote desktops
Cloud services
Real-time applications

And remember:
Latency is not the same as Internet speed.

You can have a very fast 500 Mbps connection and still experience high latency.

Understanding Latency, Packet Loss, Jitter, and Routing is an important part of understanding how a network actually behaves
