Allāh says: وَنُرِيدُ أَن نَّمُنَّ عَلَى الَّذِينَ اسْتُضْعِفُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَنَجْعَلَهُمْ أَئِمَّةً وَنَجْعَلَهُمُ الْوَارِثِينَ “And We wished to confer favor upon those who were oppressed in the land, and to make them leaders and make them the inheritors.” [al-Qaṣaṣ (28):5] A people had been broken. Generations of servitude under Pharaoh had taught Banū Isrāʾīl to fear, to submit, and to expect nothing more. Then Allāh chose to raise them up, beginning with a baby set adrift on the river.
