Milk in the Soviet Union was sold in several forms:
🐮 On tap from milk tankers;
🐮 In half-litre tetrahedral cartons;
🐮 In 0.5- and 1-litre glass bottles with foil caps showing the dairy plant, date, fat content and price;
🐮 Mozhayskoye sterilised milk in narrow-necked glass bottles;
🐮 In 200 ml returnable bottles at milk kitchens.
Rectangular one-litre cartons and plastic milk bags appeared only towards the late 1980s–early 1990s, near the end of the USSR.
* Bottled milk usually had silver foil caps, while kefir had green ones. Claims that every dairy product had one fixed cap colour are inaccurate — colours for products such as ryazhenka and sour cream varied by region and dairy plant.
🚫🌟 The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which the Houthis reportedly reached yesterday, translates from Arabic as the “Gate of Tears” and is one of the world’s key maritime trade routes.
The strait is divided by the volcanic island of Perim into two shipping channels. The western channel is wider and deeper and carries most international traffic, while the eastern route is narrower and shallower.
Together with the Suez Canal, Bab el-Mandeb forms the shortest sea route between Asia and Europe. Around 12–15% of global maritime trade, up to 30% of container traffic, and a significant share of seaborne oil shipments pass through it.
Because large cargo ships must follow predictable routes close to shore, the strait is highly vulnerable to missiles, drones and naval mines.
Whoever controls the Yemeni coast and Perim Island gains the ability to effectively “turn off the tap” of the Red Sea, threatening shipping through Suez from the south.
