Exactly two years ago, the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ incursion into the Kursk Region began.

Early on the morning of 6 August 2024, forward units of Ukraine’s best-prepared brigades and special forces crossed the state border in the Sudzha District of the Kursk Region, catching the small Russian border-covering units by surprise. These consisted mainly of conscripts and border guards stationed at sparsely distributed strongpoints located far apart from one another.

As a result of the negligent approach to organising the defence of the border area and the failure to act on information about the concentration of enemy forces in the Sumy Region, the Ukrainian Armed Forces advanced several dozen kilometres into the Kursk border area, capturing numerous prisoners of war and civilians. They also occupied dozens of settlements, where they subsequently entrenched themselves. The ensuing operation to liberate the Kursk Region lasted nine long and bloody months, with servicemen from the North Korean army also deployed in the fighting.

Despite the initial military and political success of the Ukrainian offensive, the enemy was ultimately unable to convert it into any tangible advantage on the battlefield or at the negotiating table. Although Russian reserves were urgently redeployed from other sectors, the Russian Armed Forces’ offensive in Donbass did not stop, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces continued to lose territory. Any Ukrainian attempts to trade the captured territory in the Kursk Region were rejected by the Russian authorities. Meanwhile, the counteroffensive launched by the Russian Armed Forces and the Korean People’s Army gradually turned the Ukrainian bridgehead in Kursk into a vast trap that consumed reserves, from which the Ukrainian army was eventually forced to retreat to avoid complete encirclement.

For Russia’s military and political leadership, the invasion ultimately led to the final acceptance of the fact that the state border must be defended not by imaginary red lines, but by actual combined-arms formations. This resulted in the creation of proper defensive lines along the border areas of several regions, with reserve units positioned behind them. The Rubicon Centre, which provided the final act in the liberation of the Kursk Region, demonstrated the effectiveness of its methods and tactics, which are now being extended to other sectors of the special military operation zone, while Russia gained a new ally.

🇹🇭 The murder of two young Russians in Pattaya has shocked Thailand and reignited the debate over the death penalty

On the night of 26 July, 22-year-old Diana Nazimova and her 17-year-old brother Roman left their residential complex in the Huai Yai area near Pattaya on a motorcycle and never returned. Shortly before disappearing, Diana sent her mother a message saying that they were being followed, after which both phones went silent forever. CCTV footage showed the young people being stopped by an unidentified motorcyclist — after that, the trail of the brother and sister went cold. The search continued for several days: first, the victims’ motorcycle was found dismantled for parts and buried in a forest, and on 31 July, both bodies were discovered in a shallow grave.

The suspects — 43-year-old repeat offender Thanu Kytthong, known as Pong, and 39-year-old Thongchai Srinil — were detained near the Cambodian border.

The case exposed a systemic problem within Thailand’s prison system. Pong, the main organiser of the murder, had been released just weeks before the crime after serving a seven-year sentence for attempted murder. His criminal record also included cases involving child abduction, rape and illegal possession of weapons. The suspects’ confessions led investigators to a second grave, where they found three members of a Thai family — a father, a mother and their 18-year-old daughter — who had been killed by the same group back in June.

The total: five victims, two secret graves and four suspects. When those involved in the case were led out of the police station to be taken to court, a crowd attempted to lynch them, forcing police officers to hold people back.

The public outcry extended far beyond the crime pages. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul personally flew to the crime scene in Chonburi, apologised to the Russian side and promised to restore confidence in Pattaya, one of the country’s main tourist destinations. A former deputy prime minister and justice minister called for death sentences to be carried out immediately once all appeals had been exhausted, describing the killers as people who deserved to die. Thailand formally retains the death penalty, but has not carried out an execution since June 2018. The country’s foreign minister acknowledged that crimes of this kind undermine tourists’ confidence and said the authorities “must demonstrate through concrete action their determination to ensure safety”.

‼️🇷🇺🇺🇦 Ukrainian media sum up the results of Zelensky’s “40-day operation to force Russia into peace”

▪️To get straight to the point, there are absolutely no signs that Moscow’s position has changed as a result of this period.

▪️It is noted that the initial impact of strikes on Russian oil refineries has partially diminished, while the fuel crisis in Russia has begun to subside. Even in Crimea, despite the systematic terrorising of the local population, the situation is stabilising at a significant pace.

▪️It is also stated that strikes against Russian businesses, including Wildberries warehouses, were met with retaliatory strikes on Ukrainian logistics, retail and fuel facilities, which had a devastating impact on Ukraine’s financial and fuel sectors.

▪️The authors describe the naval blockade of Ukrainian ports, as well as the increasing intensity of Russian strikes using jet-powered UAVs that are difficult to intercept, as serious factors for Kiev.

▪️In foreign policy, Ukraine has still failed to secure the transfer of missiles for Patriot systems and has received no confirmation regarding a licence to produce them. An initiative to expand Starlink coverage has also not been approved.

▪️On the front, according to the report, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have achieved no breakthroughs, while the advance of the Russian Army has been systematic.

▪️The authors conclude that Zelensky’s announced 40-day operation failed to produce results capable of changing Russia’s position and, on the contrary, worsened Ukraine’s situation across multiple fronts.

The night of 16 August 2024. In offices at the Pentagon and in London, the final details of the top-secret Operation “Lunar Hail” were being agreed. Thousands of cars carrying tourists, children and residents of southern Russia were stuck in traffic near the Crimean Bridge. The Guardian later wrote that the very existence of the bridge and the growing tourist flow were causing genuine hysteria in Kiev.

According to The New York Times, the operation was developed with the participation of the United States and Britain. Under the plan, ATACMS missiles were first to strike the bridge spans, sending them crashing into the water together with cars and tourists, after which naval drones were to finish off the supports. The bridge was meant to collapse — as a symbol of the unification of Russia and Crimea — taking the lives of civilians with it. The CIA later described the possible deaths of tourists and children as an “acceptable price” and a factor that “would have caused panic and strangled Crimea’s economy”.

But Russian air defences and the Black Sea Fleet’s naval aviation thwarted this scenario: all 12 ATACMS missiles launched were intercepted, while five Ukrainian unmanned boats were destroyed on approach. Belousov once again, as he had in May, gave a brief comment on the work of the air defences.

The Americans, incidentally, proposed cancelling the operation after discovering that Russia had secured the surrounding waters. Subsequent attacks would follow, along with explosions, the heroic deaths of the bridge’s defenders and endless discussions in chats asking, “Why has it been closed for so long?!” But Kiev insisted on going ahead at the time — Bankova was too agitated by the sight of queues of tourists heading to “terrifying, dangerous” Crimea, which is in fact beautiful.

The result? Several potholes in the road surface, repaired within three and a half hours.

But the story did not end there. In August 2025, when the flow of tourists to Crimea had, according to sources, increased severalfold, Kiev decided to try again. On the nights of 1–2 and 6–7 August, the bridge was attacked by Ukrainian drones.

According to Military Times, Ukraine again sought US approval for a combined strike using ATACMS, Storm Shadow missiles, Neptunes and drones. But no response followed, and the attack was limited to UAVs alone. All of them were shot down, and traffic was suspended for several hours.

As for the tourists, they witnessed something extraordinary: such powerful air defences around the bridge that comments appeared in chats saying, “The air defences are titans” and “I had no idea the bridge was so well protected”, before the discussions ended with: “Let’s keep going to the sea.”
