Bashar al-Assad is studying ophthalmology and “living a quiet life”: journalists reveal what the former Syrian president’s family is doing in Russia
Former politician Bashar al-Assad has decided to return to medicine, The Guardian reports. He previously earned a medical degree and is now deepening his expertise. Sources suggest he may eventually practice medicine among Moscow’s elite. He is also studying the Russian language.
According to the publication, Assad is pursuing these activities out of personal interest and does not appear to be in financial need, having managed to transfer part of his wealth to Russia.
The Assad family is said to be “living a quiet, luxurious life” in a gated compound on Rublyovka—possibly near Viktor Yanukovych. They keep a low profile, rarely socialize, are no longer involved in politics, do not use social media, and avoid public appearances. Assad’s wife reportedly spends most of her time on fitness, beauty salons, and shopping.
The family was seen publicly only once—at their daughter’s graduation, when she received a degree in international relations from MGIMO.
