Russia is building its first new military base in decades near Petrozavodsk, close to the Finnish border, Yle reports.

The base near Novaya Vilga is designed for 4,000–6,000 servicemen. Together with additional units in Karelia, the total could reach up to 15,000 troops.

Construction of the new base in Petrozavodsk began in spring and is moving at a rapid pace. Around a dozen large barracks buildings are already being erected.
