💶 A man in Cuneo, Italy, inherited 2 billion old Italian lire — worth about €1.03 million at the official fixed exchange rate — but may be unable to spend them.

The 51-year-old discovered the cash in his late uncle’s bank deposit box while settling the inheritance. The problem: the ordinary deadline for converting lire into euros expired on February 28, 2012.

The bank refused to exchange the money.

⚖️ The heir has now turned to lawyers, arguing that he could not have exchanged the banknotes earlier because he did not know they existed until the inheritance was processed.

💰 A pensioner from St. Petersburg handed scammers 8 kg of gold bars and more than 100 million rubles.

The fraud began back in May, when a scammer posing as a security service officer manipulated the woman over the phone and convinced her to hand over money. The couple were also persuaded to buy gold bars and give them to couriers, supposedly for verification.

Later, the woman’s 76-year-old husband contacted police and reported that his wife had been deceived. Police detained a 22-year-old female courier.

From May 25 to August 7, the victim’s husband handed the scammers 8.25 kg of gold bars and cash.

The total damage exceeded 102 million rubles, including both the pensioners’ own and borrowed funds.
