🌱 Renewables have overtaken coal in global power generation for the first time in 100 years.
In 2025, renewable energy sources — including hydropower, solar, wind, bioenergy, and others — took first place in the global electricity generation mix for the first time in roughly a century.
According to Ember, renewables accounted for 33.8% of global power generation, or 10,730 TWh. Coal stood at 33.0%, or 10,476 TWh. ⚡
Important detail: this refers specifically to electricity generation, not total global energy consumption. In the overall energy balance, fossil fuels still hold a significant share.
Visual Capitalist’s infographic shows the long-term trend since 1900. In the early 20th century, the high share of renewables was mainly due to hydropower. In 1919, renewable generation already exceeded coal, after which coal dominated electricity production for decades. 📊
By 2025, the balance shifted again thanks to the rapid growth of solar and wind power. The chart also shows gas and other fossil fuels at around 24%, while nuclear power accounts for roughly 9%.

A senior executive at The Walt Disney Company has been sentenced to 2.5 years in a Russian prison over cannabis gummies found in his luggage.
According to Baza, Daterao Jugal Sudhir, a 46-year-old native of India, works for the world-famous company and oversees more than 20 projects at Disney — from advertising to machine learning. ⚖️
In January, Jugal arrived in Moscow from Doha on personal business, but was stopped for inspection in the green corridor at Sheremetyevo Airport. That is when the ill-fated gummies were found in his luggage, and he was detained.
The court eventually sentenced him to 2.5 years in prison. In his final statement, the man expressed remorse and said the gummies had been prescribed to him by a doctor in the United States after brain surgery.
