"Infornography" as exaggerated Information: The Case of Omani News Media                In previous posts, we defined the word "infornography" as information addiction, but it can also have another meaning, which is "the exaggerated representation of information". To have a clear view to this definition, I took the Omani news media as an example for spreading exaggerated information.                  In Omani news media, there are many News-related Instagram accounts that share the same content shape and design. To gain some interaction, they sometimes share some misleading posts to make people misunderstand the real piece of information to gain some comments and shares. I’ll share some of them below.   Translation: "A group of scientists predicted the end of the world and the demise of the humanity before the end of the year 2026"               But is it true? The real research was about the population explosion, and the real output of the research was that the population count will reach the infinity by the end of 2026. In 1960, a group of scientists predicted that the human population would reach the infinity on Friday, 13 November 2026 based on some math calculations, but the factors that affect the population count in 1960 differ from 2026, and that’s why we can’t apply these calculations in 2026.   Translation: "Breaking news: Oman’s national day’s holiday for a period of 4 days, the holyday given on Wednesday and Thursday, 25 and 26 of November 2026, provided that the usual weekend holyday (Friday and Saturday) will remain the same, that will be 4 days in total."                Just to gain some attention, this creator made a misleading post with an attractive heading to make people think the real holiday just doubled than usual. This behavior is usually used by these pages to gain some attention and interactions.                  These two are little examples from an ocean of exaggerated content, and sometimes it might be more serious when it comes to promotions, because it might cause financial loss for some people. Be aware, Stay focused.
