XMPP/Jabber
📰 AI Helping To Improve Linux's AMD Zen CPU Microarchitecture Detection
A request for comments (RFC) was sent out last night on the Linux kernel mailing list in seeking to clean-up the AMD Zen microarchitecture detection within the kernel. This is for enhancing the kernel where there are code paths specific to a certain generation of AMD Zen processors or select generations such as Zen 3 through Zen 5 CPUs. AI was leveraged in helping to clean-up this AMD Zen code in the Linux kernel...

Firefox 159 is out, with a fresh set of improvements and some Linux-specific fixes. Now that Mozilla’s browser hews to a faster release cadence, with two releases a month rather than one, some changelogs may look minor on their own, as they’re smaller, if more frequent slices. So what’s changed? Searching through your open tabs is a smidgen easier. A keyboard shortcut was added to activate the tab search filter. The feature itself isn’t new (it could be activated in other ways), but adding a memorable shortcut helps. On Windows or Linux, press ctrl + shift + a to trigger […]

Every operating systems needs somewhere to put deleted files you no longer need, but allow you to rummage through it to find something you wanted to keep. If you’re a Brit using Ubuntu, the name of that place varies based on where you’re looking. It seems Ubuntu’s UK English translation team don’t agree on what to call a bin. The dock hover label says Trash. It opens a Rubbish Bin in the file manager, and that has an action bar button to Empty Wastebasket… And that’s before you start right-clicking things. Right-click on a file in the tr… Er, file […]

📰 Two CVSS 9.0 Linux KSMBD RCE Flaws Disclosed on Public Mailing Lists Before Kernel Fixes
Linux servers running KSMBD, the kernel's built-in SMB server, are exposed to two publicly reported remote code execution flaws rated 9.0 by Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative, with no fix yet in the mainline kernel. One of them, ZDI-CAN-33774, can be triggered before any network authentication. The other, ZDI-CAN-33549, requires the SMB Direct transport and an RDMA-capable network.
