❓ Open question: what triggers a fast radio burst?
FRBs are radio flashes lasting milliseconds that can release as much energy as the Sun emits in a year. In 2020, astronomers traced one to a magnetar in our galaxy, SGR 1935+2154, a ~20-km neutron-star remnant. When it flared again in 2022, NASA's NICER and NuSTAR caught it mid-glitch: spinning up, then slowing within nine hours, ~100x faster than any magnetar slowdown seen before -- yet X-ray bursts with enough energy produced no FRB. A 2024 study of 30 FRBs tied bursts to massive, metal-rich galaxies -- yet, as one astronomer put it: "We have no idea what's causing them."
