🛡 What’s a spare luggage shelf worth to a shop? You’ve checked out of your hotel and your train leaves in four hours. On Bounce, you find a shop near the station, book storage and drop off your suitcase. The shop has room in the back. Does the person at the till have time? 💻 What the shop gets paid for 🗣 Bounce pays partners for each item they store. A staff member checks the booking, matches the bag to it and puts it somewhere secure. At pickup, they check the booking or tag before handing it back. 🗣 One suitcase brings the same person through the door twice. If the shop is a café, they might buy a coffee. That’s worth including in the numbers once customers actually start doing it. 💻 What one bag costs to handle Suppose drop-off and pickup take six minutes in total and staff time costs €15 an hour. That’s €1.50 in labour per bag. A shop can compare its payout with that figure, then factor in the storage space and the time it takes to sort out a missing tag or a booking mix-up. 💻 What to measure in a pilot Near a station, half a dozen people catching the same train might turn up for their bags at once. For one week, I’d track three things: bags stored, staff minutes per bag and how often someone has to leave a queue at the till to fetch a suitcase. That tells the owner which hours actually make the spare shelf pay. Bounce’s partner programme Sin Unicorn 🦄🦄🦄

🛡 A camera above the bin: why restaurants pay a subscription Breakfast is over, and a hotel throws away uneaten pastries and buffet leftovers. Purchasing records show the total food bill. But without tracking waste separately, it is hard to see which dishes are overproduced and how much money is being thrown away each day. That is the opportunity for food waste tracking services. Winnow and Leanpath offer tools that record discarded food and help kitchens adjust purchasing and production. 💻 What the customer gets: 🗣 Tracking at the bin. Camera-and-scale systems identify food and measure its weight. Both providers also offer simpler tools with manual input. 🗣 Reports the team can act on. Chefs can spot recurring waste and test smaller batches, different portion sizes or changes to buffet replenishment. 🗣 Visibility across locations. Operators can compare sites and track the effects of changes. 💻 How the revenue works: Winnow charges a one-time fee for setup, training and initial support, followed by a per-site subscription. That subscription includes the system, analytics and kitchen coaching. For a new entrant, the commercial path is clear: start with one kitchen, then expand within the group if the pilot demonstrates value. Each additional site also brings rollout costs. 💻 Where the economics get tested: 🗣 For the restaurant, the key measure is the value of waste prevented, after service fees and staff time. A reduction in kilograms does not translate directly into the same reduction in costs. 🗣 For the provider, hardware, installation, support and training new staff all matter. Frequent site visits can eat into subscription revenue. A camera alone will not change how a kitchen operates. If nobody acts on the reports, the business gets detailed records of the same losses. A strong product helps answer a practical question: how much should we cook tomorrow, and which ingredients are we buying too much of? That is the value a pilot needs to prove. 🛡 Rental software: building a business around someone else’s cameras and drills One camera has been promised to two customers for Saturday. Another is back on the shelf but still needs checking. When bookings live in chats and spreadsheets, staff can rent out equipment that isn’t actually ready to leave. That problem creates a niche for rental management software. These systems connect inventory, reservations, checkouts and returns. Booqable offers availability tracking and online bookings; MCS also brings together logistics, maintenance and invoicing. 💻 What these startups sell: 🗣 Availability for specific dates: customers see what they can rent, and new bookings are reflected in stock availability. 🗣 Checkout and return tracking: staff know who has each item and when it is due back. 🗣 A connected order process: enquiries, paperwork and payments without repeatedly copying details between tools. 💻 Where the revenue comes from: 🗣 A monthly software subscription. Additional locations and features can support higher-priced plans. 🗣 Paid onboarding: importing inventory, configuring workflows and training staff. 🗣 A narrow focus can help a newcomer stand out. Film lighting rentals and construction tool hire need different bundles, rental periods and maintenance routines. 💻 Where the model gets tricky: If every customer needs a bespoke product, a subscription business can become an expensive custom development shop. And if staff don’t log returns or damage, even a polished booking calendar will show the wrong availability. There are two sets of economics to test: how much manual work and how many errors the software removes for the rental company, and how many onboarding and support hours each customer costs the startup. The takeaway: the strongest pitch starts with a simple operational promise. Staff know exactly what they can hand over on the requested dates. That clarity gives customers a concrete reason to keep paying. Product examples: Booqable · MCS Sin Unicorn 🦄🦄🦄
