India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed major messaging platforms to implement mandatory SIM-binding rules by December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2027, services such as WhatsApp and Telegram will need to remain linked to the active SIM associated with the user's registered Indian mobile number. Under the new requirements, users could lose access to their messaging accounts if the registered SIM is removed, deactivated or unavailable in the device running the app. The rules could also affect people who use messaging apps on secondary phones, tablets or other devices without their registered SIM. The government says the move aims to curb cyber fraud, impersonation, phishing and scams carried out using Indian mobile numbers. The guidelines cover several messaging platforms beyond WhatsApp and Telegram, including Signal, ShareChat, JioChat and Arattai.
