On 7 May 1994, a nationalist demonstration against American imperialism took place, despite being banned by the Paris police prefecture.
There were lots of cops on Place Denfert-Rochereau, the starting point of the demonstration. After a few clashes with the police, almost all the demonstrators were arrested; a small number of them escaped. Sébastien Deyzieu, a young 22-year-old activist, was chased for more than a kilometre by cops. He tried to take refuge in a building, followed by the policemen, but fell between the fourth and fifth floors and died two days later.
The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear and are, in any case, directly linked to police repression.
As a result of these events, the 9th of May Committee (C9M) was created.
Since then, the C9M has organised an annual commemorative procession to the building where the nationalist activist was killed.
