#My_Teaching_moments 📚 Listening... or Not? It was a quiet afternoon in my 7th-grade classroom. We were learning compound nouns: petrol station, roundabout, raincoat. Pens scratched against paper, and everything seemed to be going smoothly. Then I saw a postcard lying on the shelf. Perfect! I thought. I picked it up and held it high, making sure everyone could see it. “This is a postcard,” I explained. “You can send one to your friends or family when you’re on holiday.” I even turned it around, showing them both sides. Several students nodded. Azamat, sitting in the front row, looked directly at me. His eyes were fixed on mine. No distractions, no chatting, no moving around. Excellent, I thought. At least someone is really listening! A few minutes later, we moved on to the exercises. “Now, let’s do exercise 3 on page 35. Azamat, would you read the first sentence, please?” He stood up confidently and began: “I found a postcard with a really nice picture on it to send to my friend.” Then he stopped. He was puzzled. He looked at me with real curiosity. “Teacher, what is a postcard?” For a second, I thought I’d misheard him. What did you just ask me? 😳 I had explained the word. I had shown him an actual postcard. I had even held it up like a presenter on a shopping channel. And now, just minutes later, he was asking me what it was. I didn’t know whether to laugh, sigh, or start the whole lesson again. How could a student look so attentive and still miss the thing I had explained so clearly? His eyes had told me he was looking at me. His nods had told me he was following the lesson. 💭 Maybe Azamat wasn't being careless. Maybe I had simply mistaken attention for understanding.
