More often than not, not having cash on us has become a perfectly reasonable excuse for not giving to the poor. Someone asks for help, and we might genuinely want to give, but we have nothing to offer them in cash. We can't expect the unfortunate to have Telebirr. Most don't even have a bank account. And so, those of us who no longer carry cash face a real dilemma. Of course, a particularly compassionate person might go out of their way to buy something for them or withdraw some money. But the extra steps required can easily discourage most. What could have been a simple act of kindness becomes an inconvenience, and the opportunity passes. Our culture is slowly changing. Gradually and if this gap widens, we might be witnessing the death of generosity as we know it. Something needs to be done.
