How I Choose a VPS for Pentesting (and Get Banned Less Often)
A short note from practice — not a silver bullet.
An example from the hosting provider where I get my servers.
Rent a server
1. Plan & rental term
Start with the cheapest plan and the shortest rental period.
Use that window for setup and smoke tests.
Once everything looks stable, you can upgrade the plan — but keep the rental term short.
AUP / IP blocks are always a risk.
If the IP burns, you lose less money and spin up a fresh box faster.
2. High-risk countries
From real abuse reports (hoster AUP, AbuseIPDB, CSIRT complaints, burned VPS history), scanning these “straight” without serious filtering is a ~99% problem zone:
DE · CZ · FI · GB · PL · CA · BE · SG · US · BG · MY
Academic / gov networks inside any country zone are an extra trap (classic example: university ranges in CZ).
This is not a forever ban-list — it’s a high-risk list:
either skip them, or scrub dangerous CIDRs hard before you scan.
3. When abuse hits your IP
Don’t just drop “one random range.”
Remove the entire offending CIDR from your target list — the full network/prefix behind the complaint — not a cosmetic /32.
If you leave the parent block in place, the same subnet gets scanned again… and abuse comes back.
4. Disclaimer
This is personal experience / recommendations only.
It is not a guarantee you won’t get blocked, and not advice to break anyone’s ToS or the law.
Whatever you run on your servers and in your tests is your responsibility.
