Some people think that schools should teach children how to manage money, while others believe that this should be the parents' responsibility. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Some people argue that schools should teach children how to manage money, while others believe that this responsibility should primarily fall on parents. While it is true that schools can provide students with essential financial knowledge, I would argue that parents should play the leading role, as they are better equipped to turn theoretical principles into practical financial habits.

On the one hand, schools can make a valuable contribution to children’s financial education. Gone are the days when financial literacy was considered an unnecessary part of a child’s education. In today’s increasingly complex economic environment, students need to understand basic concepts such as budgeting, saving, tracking expenses, and making informed financial decisions. By incorporating financial education into the curriculum, schools can equip young people with the knowledge required to manage their finances responsibly in the future. Not only can this increase students’ awareness of financial matters, but it can also help them become more prepared for economic challenges. This is particularly important for children from families where financial issues are rarely discussed, as schools can provide them with knowledge that they may not otherwise acquire.

On the other hand, I believe that parents should bear the primary responsibility because school-based financial education is inevitably limited by its theoretical nature. While students may understand concepts such as budgeting and responsible spending in the classroom, they are unlikely to gain sufficient practical experience simply by studying these principles. Parents, by contrast, can introduce financial lessons naturally through everyday activities. For example, when shopping with their children, they can demonstrate how to compare prices, distinguish between needs and wants, identify genuine bargains, and make sensible purchases within a fixed budget. This hands-on approach allows children to understand the real consequences of their financial decisions rather than merely memorising financial concepts. Only when children have opportunities to apply what they have learned to real-life situations can they develop sound financial judgement and lasting money-management habits. Consequently, they are more likely to avoid impulsive spending, excessive borrowing, and other irresponsible financial behaviours later in life.

In conclusion, although schools have an important role to play in providing children with fundamental financial knowledge, I believe that parents should assume the primary responsibility for teaching money management. Gone are the days when financial education could be reduced to simply understanding basic economic concepts; children now need both knowledge and practical experience. Since parents are in a stronger position to provide this real-world guidance, their involvement is essential in raising financially responsible and independent adults.
