Love is often praised for its tenderness. What interests me more is its tendency to become demanding.
We rarely fall in love with a finished person. We fall in love with someone whose possibilities we can already see. At first, that feels generous. We encourage, challenge, and believe in one another. Yet somewhere along the way, encouragement can become expectation. Without noticing it, we begin loving not only who someone is, but who we hope they will become.
That shift feels small, but it changes everything. "I want what's best for you" can easily become "Why aren't you different?" What began as care slowly acquires the language of correction. One person experiences it as devotion; the other experiences it as never quite being enough.
Reading Wuthering Heights, I kept thinking that Emily Bronte understood this danger better than almost anyone. Catherine and Heathcliff do not simply love each other; they struggle against the impossible desire to possess one another completely. Their love refuses distance, refuses independence, even refuses time itself. It is so absolute that it leaves almost no room for either of them to exist as separate people.
What surprised me was that I never thought their tragedy began with hatred. It began with love that could not tolerate limits. They want union, but only on terms that satisfy wounded pride, jealousy, and longing. The novel suggests that affection does not become destructive when it disappears. It becomes destructive when it demands more than another human being can ever give.
That is why Wuthering Heights has never struck me as a romance in the ordinary sense. It is an examination of what happens when love mistakes possession for intimacy and intensity for devotion. Bronte forces us to confront an uncomfortable possibility: the deepest relationships are not always threatened by the absence of love, but by its excess.
I finished the novel wondering whether the greatest act of love is sometimes not changing another person at all, but resisting the temptation to do so.

“If you want to be happy, be.”
Leo Tolstoy’s words appear almost too simple. We are accustomed to thinking of happiness as something that arrives after certain conditions have been fulfilled—after we achieve success, earn enough money, find the right relationship, reach a particular destination, solve our problems, or finally become the person we imagine we should be. Yet this brief thought turns that familiar logic upside down: what if happiness is not only something we find, but also something we learn to practice?
Tolstoy spent much of his life wrestling with questions of meaning, morality, faith, ambition, mortality, and the purpose of human existence. His greatest novels are filled with people searching for fulfillment in wealth, social prestige, romance, family, achievement, and spiritual understanding. Again and again, they discover that outward success does not automatically create inward peace.
That is what makes this thought so powerful.
“If you want to be happy, be” does not have to mean pretending that suffering does not exist. Human beings experience grief, disappointment, loneliness, injustice, anxiety, and circumstances they cannot simply think away. Happiness is not a command to smile through genuine pain.
Instead, the words can be understood as a challenge to the habit of permanently postponing life.
How often do we tell ourselves, I will be happy when…?
When I have more money.
When people finally appreciate me.
When I reach my goal.
When everything becomes easier.
When my life looks the way I imagined it would.
The danger is that there may always be another condition waiting beyond the previous one. Achievement moves the horizon rather than ending the journey. One desire is satisfied and another quickly takes its place.
Tolstoy’s broader writing repeatedly questions this endless pursuit of external fulfillment. Some of his most memorable characters discover moments of meaning not through grandeur but through ordinary human experiences: family, compassion, honest work, forgiveness, nature, spiritual reflection, and genuine connection with others.
Perhaps happiness often begins there—in noticing what ambition teaches us to overlook.
A quiet morning. A conversation with someone we love. A book that changes the way we see the world. Food shared around a table. The relief of forgiving someone. The dignity of useful work. A moment in nature when nothing needs to be achieved.
None of these things eliminates suffering, but they remind us that a meaningful life does not begin only after every problem has disappeared.
There is also freedom in refusing to hand complete control of our happiness to circumstances. If happiness depends entirely upon possessions, recognition, status, or other people’s approval, then our inner life is permanently vulnerable to forces outside ourselves.
Tolstoy’s words invite another possibility: cultivate gratitude where you are, recognize what is already meaningful, and do not postpone every experience of joy until some imagined future finally arrives.
Because perhaps one of life’s quietest tragedies is reaching the destination we believed would make us happy and realizing that we forgot to live while traveling toward it.
So instead of asking only, “What must happen before I can be happy?” perhaps we should sometimes ask:
What happiness is already present in my life that I have been too busy to notice?
