A magpie brought news on its tail

🤩 In Rus, people believed that if a magpie chatters loudly near the house, it means one should expect guests or news. In folk omens, this bird was associated with conversations, rumours and unexpected tidings. Therefore, hearing it near the yard meant that soon someone would drop by or bring news.

💰 However, the magpie became famous not only for its chattering. People believed that it loved to grab shiny objects, and another story is connected with this belief: that the bird drags away anything left lying around — from jewellery to golden trinkets. It is not for nothing that in fairy tales the magpie was often depicted as a curious thief who drags other people's treasures to its nest. Thus the bird, capable of raising a din for the whole yard, gained a reputation as both a great gossip and a petty thief.

Svetlana Savitskaya — Soviet cosmonaut who was the first woman to walk in space

🚀 On 25 July 1984, Savitskaya went outside the «Salyut-7» station together with cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov. They spent about 3 hours 35 minutes in open space and tested a special tool for metalworking in space. It was not just a test of equipment, but work that could be useful for the repair and construction of space structures directly in orbit.

🚀 Savitskaya became the first woman to walk in space and thus proved her professionalism in the most difficult conditions. Her flight became an important page in the history of Soviet cosmonautics, and she herself entered the ranks of women who took part in space exploration on an equal footing with men.

🎪 Construction of the new Great Moscow Circus has begun in Moscow

Construction of the new Great Moscow Circus has begun in Moscow, in the Mnevniki floodplain. Moreover, the architectural design of the future complex was chosen by the city's residents themselves through an online vote.

📱 The voting took place on the «Active Citizen» platform — a Moscow digital service where residents can take part in decisions on the city's development: choosing improvement projects, names of facilities, design options for public spaces and other city initiatives.

The main feature of the new circus will be an arena with 11 transformation options. Within a few minutes the ring can turn into an ice rink, a pool for water shows, a multimedia stage or a space for equestrian performances.

🧱 The area of the complex will be 82,200 sq m, capacity up to 5,000 spectators, and the height of the dome will approach 100 metres.

The new circus will appear next to the «Mnevniki» and «Terekhovo» metro stations. Construction is planned to be completed in 2029.

Shumak — a valley of mineral springs in Siberia

💚 Shumak is a valley in the Eastern Sayan Mountains, in Buryatia, known for its mineral springs and mountain landscapes. It is located far from large settlements, among forests, rocks and high mountains, which makes getting there extremely difficult. A mountain river flows here, waterfalls are found, and snow lies on the slopes even in the warm season.

☀️ The main feature of Shumak is the presence of more than a hundred mineral springs with different water compositions. They emerge to the surface throughout the valley, and small stone baths have been built next to some of them. You can get here on foot along a mountain trail or by helicopter, so the place remains hard to reach and preserves its natural appearance.

The Iver Icon — guardian at the gates

✝️ Today, 26 October, Russia celebrates the day of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God — one of the most venerated Orthodox images. According to tradition, the icon miraculously sailed across the sea to the shores of Athos. The monks transferred it to the monastery, but soon the icon appeared above the gates of the abbey. The monks returned it to the church, but it appeared again at the entrance, until, according to tradition, the Mother of God revealed to one of the monks that she herself wished to be the guardian of the monastery.

🇷🇺 A copy of the icon was brought to Russia from Athos in 1648. The icon was placed in a chapel by the Resurrection Gates of Kitay-gorod. Soon the image became especially venerated among the townspeople. To this day, believers throughout Russia deeply venerate the Iveron Icon, and its feast occupies an important place in the Orthodox calendar.

🍁 The Putorana Plateau in Taymyr in autumn offers a riot of colours and a diversity of natural landscapes.

The Putorana Plateau is a huge basalt massif beyond the Arctic Circle in the north of Krasnoyarsk Krai, formed after the eruption of a supervolcano about 252 million years ago. Here flat-topped «table» mountains, deep canyons, tens of thousands of lakes with fjord-like shores and hundreds of waterfalls are combined.
