🇪🇸PhD Position in theory and simulation of DNA mechanics [soft-matter]

Fully-funded PhD position for 3 years to study the sequence-dependent mechanical properties of DNA and related problems in biophysics and biocellular processes. The candidate will work on the development and optimization of our coarse-grained model and apply it to study systems
of interest with sequence-dependent response to external mechanical stress. Research will be carried out at IFIMAC at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain), a "María de Maeztu" excellence center on the physics of condensed matter.

Expected starting date is March 2021, although a different date may be an option. Salary will be in line with Spanish national programs (around 1400 € gross salary per month) and will be funded by a "La Caixa" Junior Leader Fellowship sustained by la Caixa Foundation (ID 100010434) and the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowoska-Curie grant agreement No 874648.

🇮🇹PhD position in computational biophysics in Trento, Italy [soft-matter]

A fully-funded PhD position is available at the Physics Dept. of the University of Trento in the ERC StG project VARIAMOLS (variable resolution algorithms for macromolecular simulation). The position is conditional on execution of that specific research topic. Research activities are planned in the areas of statistical physics, soft matter physics, and computational biophysics.

Additionally, further PhD positions are available upon competitive selection among candidates applying for open-topic fellowships.

🇨🇳Postdoctoral Positions for soft-Matter Experiments in Wenzhou, China [soft-matter]

Applications are invited for several open Postdoc positions (2-3 years) in Wenzhou Institute, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Wenzhou, China). Candidates with experimental experience in colloids, interfacial engineering, polymer chemistry and physics, rheology, soft materials, biomimetic materials are welcome.

Potential subjects include the phase behaviors of asymmetric colloids at liquid interfaces, designing new soft materials with complex microstructures & unique functions, as well as the combination between soft matter and biological processes (e.g., via phase separation). The successful candidates will work in an internationalized and relax environment, cooperate closely with computational members in the institute, and the researchers from other international partners in both academic institutions and industry. Some of the project can also be carried out in Beijing, China.

The salary is around 320k CNY/year (~45k USD); outstanding candidates can apply for a higher salary.

🇳🇱Vitrimat: PhD position in theoretical/computational soft matter physics in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. [soft-matter]

We invite applications for a PhD position in theoretical/computational soft matter physics at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. The position is part of the European research consortium Vitrimat (www.vitrimat.eu), and the successful candidate will work closely with our international academic and industrial partners.

Project description:

You will develop theoretical and computational models accounting for the structural and mechanical behaviour of vitrimers, a novel class of polymer materials that inherit unique functionality from dynamic, exchangeable crosslinkers. You will focus on predictive modeling of the mechanical performance provided by different exchange mechanisms, based on experimental results gathered from the different partners of the consortium. The main focus will be to understand the link between structure, microscopic relaxation dynamics, and (bulk) mechanical properties for given exchange mechanisms.

The project will be carried out in the Theory of Polymers and Soft Matter group (https://www.tue.nl/en/research/research-groups/theory-of-polymers-and-soft-matter/) at the Department of Applied Physics, Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands. The project will be supervised by profs. Wouter Ellenbroek, Liesbeth Janssen and Cornelis Storm.

Job Requirements:

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related subject. Experience with computer simulation methods, programming and polymer physics is an advantage. Good command of the English language, spoken and written, is essential.

This International Training Network is explicitly intended to promote international mobility of young researchers. A strict condition of eligibility is therefore that the candidate has not resided in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date, and has not carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the Netherlands during this same period.

I, Janne-Mieke Meijer, have an open PhD and post-doc position in the field of experimental soft matter physics at the new group I will be starting at the department of Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands.

The PhD project will focus on developing temperature sensitive colloidal systems to investigate defect formation and diffusion in colloidal crystals. The post-doc project will focus on the role of anisotropy in colloidal building block shape and interactions on self-assembly processes. 🇳🇱Six PhD/Postdoc openings in Theory, Computer simulations and Machine learning in Soft Matter (ERC Adv grant)

I, Marjolein Dijkstra, have six European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant funded openings for PhD students and Postdocs in my group in the Soft Condensed Matter group of the Debye institute for Nanomaterials science in the physics department at Utrecht University.

The aim of the project is to study “the rational design of soft hierarchical materials with life-like functionalities using computer simulations and machine learning”. Projects will involve developing coarse-grained models of soft deformable particles (ligand-stabilised nanoparticles, microgel particles, and hydrogels) using machine learning and atomistic simulations, colloidal self-assembly using particle-based simulations, investigating nucleation and kinetic pathways of phase transformations using enhanced sampling techniques and machine learning, rational design of dynamic materials with adaptive, reconfigurable, and shape-shifting properties.

The ideal candidate has a background in theoretical or computational physics (or a related field) with a strong background in statistical physics, soft matter, and programming in e.g. C or C++, python, LAMPPS.
